Raffles City Convention Centre Singapore is a major integrated complex of commercial space, retail, hotel, and convention centers in the heart of Singapore’s business district managed by CapitaLand. The building was designed by world-renowned architect I M Pei with the concept of a “city within the city”.

Raffles City Convention Center Singapore opened in 1986 and connects orchard road tourist and shopping streets with the commercial and financial district of Raffles Place and the surrounding area. The complex includes Raffles City Singapore, Raffles City Tower, Raffles City Convention Center Singapore Swissotel The Stamford, and Fairmont Singapore.

Raffles City Convention Center Singapore is a major shopping mall spread over 5 floors on Floors 1, 2, 3, and Basements 1 and 2. The mall currently houses more than 200 specialty stores, including international fashion brands, restaurants, luxury watch and jewelry brands, beauty stores, and dining concepts.

Raffles City Convention Center Singapore is a large complex located in the residential area of downtown Singapore. Occupying an entire city block bordering Stamford Road, Beach Road, Bras Basah Road, and North Bridge Road, the hotel has two hotels and an office tower above the podium that houses a shopping complex and convention center. The mall is managed by CapitaCommercial Trust and CapitaMall Trust. It was completed in 1986.

Built on the former site of Raffles Academy, Singapore’s first school, and adjacent to the historic Raffles Hotel, the simple geometric aluminum design provides a striking contrast to modernist architecture. Victorian and classical architecture is used to characterize the architecture of the district. The Hungarian Embassy is located on the 29th floor of the raffles city tower, which is also the office of the European Delegation.

Original Plan of the Building

The construction, originally called Raffles International Center, was first announced in 1969, covering an area stretching from raffles facilities to the Cathay building. However, due to rising costs and a shortage of skilled workers, the plan was postponed from 1973 to 1975. In addition to the cost issue, new construction approvals were granted in 1979. In the same year, the development was renamed Raffles City, and the development was scaled back to the site of the former Raffles facility.

Building and Renovation

The laying of the first stone for the Raffles City Convention Center Singapore took place on August 1, 1980, and was officially opened to the public on October 3, 1986. The complex was designed by I.M. Pei in one of his first works in the city. During the 1990s, the shopping complex underwent a major renovation, with a different look. In June 2005, management announced that the underground part of the complex would be expanded, with an additional 30-50 stores, and completed in July 2006 with MPH bookstores, food and beverage outlets, and fashion stores in expansion.

Gloria Jean’s Coffees has also returned home after leaving the country a few years ago. The complex is connected directly to the City Hall metro station (exit “A”) via an escalator from the entrance of the building and to the Esplanade metro station (exit “G”) from basement 2, to Esplanade Xchange and then to Marina Square.

Until the hotel management contract with Starwood Hotels and Resorts expired at the end of 2001, the two hotels in Raffles City were known as The Westin Stamford and The Westin Plaza. On 1 January 2002, the two hotels were renamed Swissôtel the Stamford and Raffles The Plaza.

Expansion and Reconfiguration

On August 20, 2006, the new owners announced plans to expand the retail space to 150,000 to 200,000 square feet (19,000 m2) from the current 356,000 square feet (33,100 m2), using parking space in basements two and three. Two CapitaLand real estate trusts will spend S$86 million on expansion. The underground line connecting the Esplanade metro station and City Hall opened on July 15, 2010. [9]

On December 20, 2021, CapitaLand announced a reconfiguration of 111,000 square feet (10,300 m2) of land. from floors 1 to 3 to attract more specialty stores with newly installed escalators to improve accessibility for shoppers, replacing the space currently occupied by One Assembly and formerly the Robinsons and Co. department store, which will close on January 3, 2022.

The reconfiguration will include a new store concept and branding as part of the property improvement initiative, which will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The complex of Raffles City Convention Center Singapore includes the former tallest hotel in the world. It is now the fourteenth tallest hotel in the world, the 73-story Swissôtel Stamford, the high-end 28-story twin tower hotel, the Fairmont Singapore, and the Raffles Ci rectangular office building with a 2-story Tower. Japanese department store Sogo opened in 1986, but left the basement and supermarket space (now occupied by Jason) in 2000. This is after the business ran into financial difficulties due to the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
